One of the most satisfying feelings in the world is falling asleep on a warm, clean newly washed bed sheet. The velvety soft sheet that presses against your skin, the sweet smell of clean sheets are just simple pleasures we enjoy as adults.
But did you know that sleeping on the right sheets can improve your sleep quality and consequently enhances your health and well-being? Here are some simple tips to help you choose the right sheets for restful night’s sleep.
1. Fabric Is Key
Knowing the fabric of your sheets is important.
Synthetic sheets trap heat. Cotton sheets are comfortable and breathable. Sateen finished cotton sheets are plush, soft, durable and luxurious. So knowing your fabric makes a world of difference.
Synthetic sheets commonly lead to restlessness and poor sleep quality. Quality 100% cotton sheets allow you to self regulate your temperature which means you’ll stay warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather, allowing you to achieve more restful sleep while staying comfortable all night long. Sateen finished cotton sheets are cool to sleep on, is good for those who suffer from allergies as they resist mildew and your hair becomes less tangled and matted when you sleep.
Ultimately, for our Malaysian weather, cotton sheets are the preferred choice as it’s absorbent, breathable, soft, durable and cooling too. We’d recommend the beautiful cotton sheets from The Linens Company for the ultimate comfort.
3. Getting The Right Fit
Mattresses come in different heights and depths. Standard sizes like queen and king don’t account for mattress depth. So if yours is tall or if you use a thicker mattress topper, remember to measure before you purchase. Ultimately, fitted sheets that fit up to 15-inch mattresses have been proven to fit better.
4. Maintaining Your Sheets
Generally, we spend between 5-8 hours of sleep daily, causing our sheets accumulate sweat, dirt and grime pretty quickly. Dirty sheets can affect the quality of your sleep, so invest time to clean your sheets at least once a week or even twice a week in our humid weather. Contrary to popular belief, washing your sheets often does not fade your sheets, instead it allows you to maintain the quality of your sheets and prevent discolouration of your white sheets.
With cotton sheets, just regular detergent and drying methods would suffice. However, if you do have sensitive skin, avoid scented detergents that can cause respiratory and skin irritation.
You can also spritz some essential oils on your clean sheets to help you achieve deeper more restful sleep, all night, every night.
Bonus Tips:
- Always place a mattress protector first before laying down your sheets. This helps to ensure your Sealy mattress is protected from any spillage or stains.
- Iron your sheets because, who doesn’t like nice, crisp sheets? Once you’re done ironing, place the washing label/tag on the fitted sheet towards the headboard. This is especially important for Super King fitted sheets as there are joining seams for these sizes, and this method will keep those seams hidden.
